RADIATORS FAIL IN PREDICTABLE WAYS — AND MOST ARE QUICK FIXES

A stuck TRV. A leaking valve. A cold patch caused by sludge. An old radiator that’s lost capacity over the years. These are the four most common radiator problems in Perth homes — and all four are quick fixes once you’ve diagnosed the actual cause. A whole new radiator only really makes sense when the radiator body itself has corroded internally, which is much rarer than people think.

EcoGas diagnoses radiator problems properly before quoting. Thermal imaging on the radiator surface shows exactly where the cold spots are. A magnetic filter check reveals system sludge. Pressure testing the valves identifies leaks. We tell you honestly whether you need a £15 valve change or a £180 radiator replacement.

RADIATOR & THERMOSTAT ISSUES WE FIX

Diagnosed first, fixed properly, guaranteed for 12 months

RADIATOR FULLY COLD

Stuck TRV closed, system imbalance, or sludge blocking flow — quick diagnosis, usually a fast fix.

COLD AT TOP OR BOTTOM

Cold at top means trapped air (bleed it). Cold at bottom means sludge build-up — needs flushing.

VALVE LEAK

Drip from a radiator valve — usually a worn olive seal or failing TRV head. £15–£40 part.

STUCK TRV

Thermostatic valve stuck open or closed — usually the pin underneath has seized. Sometimes fixable, sometimes needs replacing.

OLD RADIATOR

Original radiators from a 1970s install lose capacity over time — replacement with a modern higher-output model can transform a room.

OLD THERMOSTAT

Time to upgrade to a smart control? Nest, Hive, Tado, Honeywell — all common installs.

ECOGAS'S RADIATOR & CONTROLS SERVICE

REPAIRS & UPGRADES

Single radiator replacements, valve and TRV swaps, full system balancing, sludge clearance, individual radiator removal for redecorating.

SMART CONTROLS

Upgrade old timers and mechanical thermostats to smart controls — Nest, Hive, Tado, Honeywell, Drayton. Typical pay-back through energy savings in 1–2 years.

WHAT PERTH SAYS ABOUT OUR RADIATOR WORK

Vincent J. — Perth

Master bedroom radiator had been cold for years. EcoGas thermal-imaged it, found severe sludge restriction, did a targeted flush plus a new TRV. Radiator works properly for the first time in a decade.

Wendy O. — Perth

Replaced four old single-panel radiators with modern double-panel double-convector models. EcoGas balanced the whole system afterwards. Rooms heat up twice as fast now — incredible difference.

Xavier S. — Perth

Fitted a Hive smart thermostat and three zone valves so we have proper multi-zone control. Engineer explained how to use the app, all working perfectly. Already saving on gas bills.

Yvonne C. — Perth

Living room radiator started leaking at the valve. EcoGas had a replacement TRV on the van, fixed it in 30 minutes. Reasonable price for a quick fix, no upselling.

RADIATOR PROBLEMS DON'T GO AWAY ON THEIR OWN

A cold radiator wastes the gas you're paying for to heat the room. A leaking valve costs more in damaged carpet than the £15 part. Fix it.

RADIATOR FAQS

WHY IS MY RADIATOR COLD AT THE TOP?
Almost always trapped air. Bleed the radiator using a bleed key — turn the bleed nipple at the top corner anti-clockwise a quarter turn until you hear a hiss, then wait until water starts to come out and close it. If the radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top, the cause is different (usually sludge build-up restricting flow). If bleeding doesn’t help, we can diagnose deeper system issues.
Usually repaired. The radiator itself rarely fails — what fails is the valve, the TRV, the system balance, or sludge accumulation inside. We thermal-image the radiator to see exactly where the cold spots are, then recommend the cheapest effective fix. Whole-radiator replacement is only needed when the body itself has corroded internally, which is uncommon.
TRV stands for Thermostatic Radiator Valve — a self-regulating valve that controls flow based on the room temperature. You should have a TRV on every radiator EXCEPT the one in the room where your main thermostat is. TRVs save energy by letting each room heat to its own target temperature, rather than the whole house running at the main thermostat setting.
For most Perth homes, yes — typical pay-back through energy savings is 1–2 years. Smart thermostats let you control heating remotely, set schedules per room (with smart TRVs), and learn your habits to optimise gas use. We install Nest, Hive, Tado and Honeywell — all good options with different strengths. We’ll recommend the right one for your home and how you live.
Yes — radiator removal for decorating is a common job. Isolate the valves, drain the radiator, remove it carefully, plug or seal the pipes safely, refit and rebleed after decorating. Typically a 45-minute job each side (removal and refit). We can quote a fixed price covering both visits.
Almost always sludge — magnetite particles from corrosion build up in the bottom of radiators and restrict water flow. Symptoms get worse over time. We diagnose with thermal imaging and treat with either a targeted radiator flush (removed and cleaned individually) or a full system power flush if multiple radiators are affected. Fitting a magnetic filter prevents it returning.
