GAS LEAKS ARE LIFE-SAFETY EMERGENCIES — DO THE RIGHT THINGS FAST

Smelling gas in your property is the most serious household emergency. Natural gas is highly flammable and can ignite from any spark — a light switch, a doorbell, a phone screen. Even a small undetected leak can build up to dangerous concentration over hours. The right response in the first five minutes can prevent a tragedy.

Do these three things in order: (1) Don’t switch any electrical items on or off. (2) Open windows and leave the property if the smell is strong. (3) Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 first — they will isolate the supply at the meter if needed. Once the supply is isolated and the property is safe, call EcoGas to arrange leak location, repair and re-certification.

SIGNS OF A GAS LEAK

Any of these warrants immediate action

GAS SMELL

Distinctive 'rotten eggs' smell — added to natural gas specifically so leaks can be detected by smell.

HISSING SOUND

Hissing or whistling noise near a gas pipe, appliance, or meter — sign of escaping gas.

DEAD VEGETATION

Patches of dead grass or plants near the gas supply pipe entering the property — sign of underground gas leak.

HEADACHE OR DROWSINESS

Family members getting unexplained headaches, nausea or drowsiness at home — possible CO from incomplete combustion.

HIGH GAS BILL

Gas usage higher than normal for no obvious reason — possibly an undetected slow leak.

YELLOW FLAMES

Gas appliance flames that should be blue burning yellow or orange — sign of incomplete combustion.

ECOGAS'S GAS LEAK DETECTION SERVICE

FULL GAS TIGHTNESS TEST

Comprehensive pressure test of the entire gas system in your property — meter to appliances. Identifies even very small leaks that would be undetectable by smell alone.

LOCATE AND REPAIR

Once a leak is identified, we pinpoint the exact location using electronic gas detectors and visual inspection. Repair using manufacturer-spec materials and full re-testing afterwards.

WHAT PERTH SAYS AFTER A GAS LEAK FIX

Ian J. — Perth

Smelt gas in the kitchen on a Saturday evening. National Gas Emergency isolated the supply. EcoGas arrived within an hour — Gas Safe engineer, full property tightness test, found a worn cooker connector. Replaced it, re-tested, certified. Professional and calm throughout.

Julia K. — Perth

Gas bills had been creeping up for months with no explanation. EcoGas tightness tested the system, found a tiny leak at a soldered joint inside an airing cupboard. Too small to smell, but enough to show on the meter. Repaired and re-certified. Bills back to normal.

Karen L. — Perth

Hissing sound near the gas meter. EcoGas confirmed it was a leak at the meter union (just inside our side of the meter), repaired it with manufacturer-spec parts. Full pressure test before and after, written certificate. Excellent.

Linda M. — Perth

Smell of gas in the loft area — couldn't locate the source ourselves. EcoGas used electronic detectors to pinpoint a leak at an old soldered joint that had failed with age. Replaced the joint, re-tested the system, certified. Peace of mind.

GAS LEAK DETECTION FAQS

WHAT DOES NATURAL GAS SMELL LIKE?
Natural gas itself is odourless. Gas suppliers add a chemical called mercaptan to give it a distinctive ‘rotten eggs’ or sulphurous smell — specifically so leaks can be detected by smell. If you smell something resembling rotten eggs, decaying vegetables, or a strong sulphur odour anywhere in your property, treat it as a gas leak until proven otherwise.
(1) Don’t switch any electrical items on or off — not even a light switch, as the spark can ignite gas. (2) Open windows. (3) Leave the property if the smell is strong. (4) Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 — they isolate the supply at the meter if needed, free of charge. (5) Once the property is safe, call us to arrange leak location, repair and re-certification.
Two-stage process: (1) Gas tightness test of the entire system — pressurise the gas pipework with the appliances isolated, measure for any pressure drop over a timed period. Pressure drop confirms a leak exists. (2) Leak location using electronic gas detectors — handheld devices that detect gas concentrations in the air. We test every joint, pipe section and connection until the source is pinpointed.
Most home insurance policies cover gas emergencies including leak detection costs and repair. Some policies also cover trace and access costs. Always check your specific policy — but provide our paperwork (gas tightness test certificate, leak location report, repair invoice with parts listed) and most insurers will process the claim. Many Perth customers have successfully claimed.

Yes — small leaks can be below the threshold of human smell. Signs of an undetectable leak: gas bills higher than expected, dead patches of vegetation near the gas supply pipe entering the property, persistent unexplained headaches at home (possible CO), or yellow flames on gas appliances. We recommend a periodic tightness test every few years for older properties even without symptoms.

A gas leak releases unburnt natural gas (methane plus added mercaptan smell). Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is different — CO is produced by incomplete combustion in faulty gas appliances. CO is odourless and colourless. Symptoms include headache, nausea, drowsiness, confusion. Working CO alarms are essential in any property with gas appliances. We can test for both during a leak detection visit.
