WHY IS MY MANHOLE OVERFLOWING?

Manhole overflows because something downstream of the manhole is blocking the flow — water and waste backs up and finds the manhole as the easiest escape route. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EXTERNAL DRAINS — ME OR SCOTTISH WATER?

Drains inside your property boundary and the section leading to where it joins a shared sewer are your responsibility. Shared drains (lateral drains) connecting multiple properties became Scottish Water’s responsibility in 2008. We’ll always check the responsibility before quoting any work and can liaise directly with Scottish Water if it’s their issue.
