OUTSIDE PLUMBING IS THE FIRST THING TO FAIL IN WINTER

An outside tap is easy to fit badly. A DIY-installed garden tap without an internal isolator, without a check valve, and without frost protection will fail the first hard winter — sometimes burst the pipe inside the wall too. Done badly, an outside tap goes from convenience to expensive disaster in one cold snap.

EcoGas fits outside taps the proper way. Internal isolator valve so you can drain the tap before winter. WRAS-compliant double check valve so garden water can’t back-flow into the house supply. Proper through-wall installation with sealed cabling so cold can’t track inside. Insulated pipework where exposed. Done right, an outside tap is a 30-year fixture.

WHAT PERTH SAYS ABOUT OUR OUTDOOR PLUMBING

Naomi C. — Perth

Had EcoGas fit a proper outside tap on our south-facing wall. Internal isolator under the kitchen sink, double check valve, sealed properly. Made the install look easy. Three winters in and it's been perfect.

Owen B. — Perth

The previous owners had bodged an outside tap — no isolator, no check valve, water tracking back inside the wall. EcoGas removed it, refitted it properly, added insulation. Should have done it years ago.

Penny F. — Perth

Garden irrigation system fed from a new outside tap connection. EcoGas handled the lot — feed pipe through the wall, isolator, pressure regulator and the connection to the irrigation controller. Tidy work.

Quentin S. — Perth

Outside tap had frozen and split during the cold spell. EcoGas thawed it carefully, replaced the split section, fitted proper insulation. Came back the next winter for a quick service to make sure it was ready. Genuinely thoughtful.

OUTSIDE TAP FAQS

WHY DO I NEED AN INTERNAL ISOLATOR FOR AN OUTSIDE TAP?
Two reasons. First, regulations require it — under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, an outside tap must have an isolator so it can be drained for winter. Second, practical: if the outside tap or pipe fails, you need to be able to isolate it without turning off the whole house supply. Any installer who skips this is breaking regulations.
A Double Check Valve (DCV) is a non-return device that prevents water from the garden flowing back into the house supply. Required by law on any outside tap because garden water (which may have touched soil, plants, animals or chemicals) is treated as a contamination risk. Costs around £15 fitted — non-negotiable on a compliant install.
Three layers of protection: (1) Turn off the internal isolator and open the outside tap before the first cold snap to drain it; (2) Insulate the section of pipe between the isolator and the outside tap if exposed; (3) Fit an insulated outdoor tap cover (cheap from any DIY store) over winter. With these three steps, freezing is rarely a problem.
Almost any — we need a wall close to an existing cold mains supply, accessible from outside, and capable of having a 15mm pipe routed through it. Cavity walls, solid brick, render — all handled with the right fittings. Listed buildings or conservation areas may need consent first, which we can advise on.
A standard outside tap install takes 2–3 hours including the survey, drilling through the wall, fitting the internal isolator and DCV, fitting the outside tap, sealing everything, and full pressure-testing. Complex installs with longer pipe runs or difficult walls can take 4–5 hours. We’ll confirm the exact timing after the free site survey.
Yes — useful for cleaning, washing pets, or rinsing muddy boots. Requires a hot supply within reasonable distance of the install point, plus a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) so the outside hot tap can’t exceed a safe temperature. Quoted on a job-by-job basis.
Not for a standard domestic outside tap — but the installation must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. We fit only WRAS-approved components and provide installation records to confirm compliance. For commercial properties or unusual setups (livestock, irrigation, fire suppression), notification may be needed and we’ll handle the paperwork.
